Over the last few days, there has been a lot circulating within the dog grooming industry. Like many of you, I’ve seen the video. And like many of you, I found it incredibly difficult to watch.
My initial reaction was emotional, because at the heart of this, we are talking about dogs. Animals that rely entirely on us for their safety, care and well being. Dogs are not just pets. They are family and when we leave them in the care of a groomer, we are placing a huge amount of trust in that person.
But this conversation goes deeper than one video.
This isn’t just about one situation. It highlights something much bigger, something that has been quietly sitting in the background of the industry for a long time. The dog grooming industry, as it stands, is largely unregulated. There is no single standard that everyone must meet. There is no consistent level of training required.
There is no universal system of accountability and that creates a gap.A gap where standards can vary. A gap where expectations are not always clear. Ultimately, a gap where situations like this can happen. But it’s important to say this clearly…
The vast majority of dog groomers are incredible. They are patient, skilled and most of all compassionate, working with dogs that are often:
- anxious
- reactive
- fearful
- unpredictable
Sometimes even dangerous. This is not an easy job. It takes experience, calm handling, understanding of behaviour and a genuine care for the animals in front of them. The good groomers, the ones doing things properly every single day deserve to be recognised and respected for that.
So where do we go from here?
Conversations like this are uncomfortable, but they are necessary, because they bring attention to what really matters:
- Higher standards
- Better education
- More transparency
- Accountability within the industry
Not to tear people down — but to raise the level of care across the board.
From my position
I am not a dog groomer, but I work with dog groomers every single day. Not just as customers, but friends too and I see first-hand the pride so many take in their work. The early mornings and long days. Never mind the physical and emotional demands. All for the well being of the dogs in their care.
That’s why this matters.
At the heart of it all…This isn’t about drama. It isn’t about pointing fingers. It’s about something much more important. Dogs deserve to feel safe. Owners deserve to feel confident and good groomers deserve to be part of an industry that reflects the standards they already uphold.
Moments like this don’t define the industry, but how we respond to them does. If it leads to more awareness, better conversations and higher standards, then something positive can come from it. Because at the end of the day…
Dogs can’t speak for themselves.
So it’s up to all of us to make sure they are treated with the care, patience and respect they deserve.
